How Long Should a Forklift Last?
There is no single replacement age that applies to every forklift. I evaluate operating hours, repair history, maintenance costs, downtime, application, and reliability. Two forklifts of the same age can have very different replacement timelines depending on how they have been used and maintained.
A lightly used forklift operating in a clean environment may continue delivering dependable service well beyond 10 years. A forklift running multiple shifts in a demanding application may reach the point of declining reliability much sooner.
Should You Repair or Replace Your Forklift?
Instead of asking only, “How much will it cost to repair?” I encourage customers to ask, “Is this still the best long-term investment?”
Consider:
- How often the forklift has required repairs
- Whether repair costs are becoming more significant
- How much downtime the truck is creating
- Which major components may need attention next
- Whether the truck still supports current production demands
- How the cost compares with a new or renewed replacement

A good example is a drive motor replacement. This repair can cost $5,000 or more and typically occurs later in a forklift’s life. Because it is often less expensive than purchasing a new or renewed truck, many customers choose the repair as the lower-cost option in the short term.
Before making that decision, I encourage customers to consider two questions:
- How much have you already invested in repairs on this truck?
- Is this repair a sign that other major components may be nearing the end of their service life?
In many cases, I have seen customers move forward with a drive motor replacement only to face another significant repair within the next year, such as replacing the battery or repairing the mast. At that point, the total investment in repairs can quickly approach the cost of replacing the forklift with equipment that offers greater reliability and lower maintenance costs.
Should Newer Technology Influence the Decision?
Yes. Replacement is not always about fixing what is broken. Newer forklifts often include advances in operator-assist technology, visibility, ergonomics, energy efficiency, and fleet management that were not available when older equipment was built.
